• Stop and walk the pier. The wooden pier at Oceanside is the longest wooden pier on the west coast. It is 1,942 feet long and it opened on July 4, 1927. You can fish, watch for dolphins or migrating whales, eat (try Ruby’s Diner at the end of the pier) shop, watch the surfers and walk the beach.
• Check out Oceanside Harbor and Marina. You can walk to Oceanside’s quaint small craft marina and harbor from the pier. Explore the Cape Cod-style fishing village, the lighthouse and see the yachts at dock and swinging on their anchors in the harbor. There are restaurants and shops throughout the marina area.
• Got bikes? Try the San Luis Rey River Trail. The San Luis Rey River Trail is a Class 1 bicycle trail about seven miles long. Fairly flat, it follows the San Luis Rey River. It’s separated from vehicle traffic and is also used by hikers, runners and skaters. Access parking is nearby and the views are lovely. Access locations include North Coast Village and Neptune Way.
• For surfers: See the surfing museum. The California Surf Museum, at 312 Pier View Way is one of the best small museums in America, whether you are a surfer or not. Its current exhibitions celebrate the 50th anniversary of famous Hansen surfboards with a retrospective of the history of the founder and the family and vintage Hansen boards on display. Also on display: the surfboard that teenager Bethany Hamilton was paddling in the fall of 2003 when she was attacked by a shark off a Kauai, Hawaii beach. The surfboard has a 15-inch gash in it made by the tiger shark that also took Bethany’s left arm. Bethany, the subject of the recent movie “Soul Surfer,” has gone on to be a professional surfer and could come to Oceanside for next summer’s U.S. Open here. The SoCal Surf School is also in Oceanside if you want a lesson or two, or you can rent a board from a surf shop if you just want some time in the waves.
• For birders: See the Audubon Society Nature Center. The Buena Vista Audubon Society Nature Center is located at 2202 South Coast Highway. Besides beautiful displays of native birds, it features regular bird walks and the annual Oceanside Bird Count on Dec. 26.
• For art lovers. Visit the art museum. The Oceanside Museum of Art at 704 Pier View Way boasts five major exhibitions and 10 rotating exhibitions per year, from traditional landscape paintings to botanical photographs to neon sculpture and art quilts. The museum redesigns its galleries for every exhibit.
• For gamblers – From blackjack to horses. Ocean’s 11 Casino is at 121 Brooks St. The Del Mar Race Track, in nearby Del Mar, has Thoroughbred horse racing in a summer racing season that starts next year on July 18 and ends on Sept. 5. The race track has a rich history of its own. The famous match race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti was held there on Aug. 12, 1938. Seabiscuit, carrying five pounds more weight than Ligaroti in front of 20,000 fans, won by a nose.
• For history lovers. See the historic missions. San Luis Rey de Francia, the “King of Missions,” was the 18th of the Franciscan missions in California. Fifty-four Indians were baptized on June 13, 1798, the day the site of Mission San Luis Rey was dedicated and the first structure was built soon after of adobe and burnt bricks. See the historic Mission San Luis Rey at 4070 Mission Avenue. Also in San Diego County, see Mission San Diego de Acala and Pala Mission. The famous San Juan de Capistrano is 30 miles up the road, and the cliff swallows return to it around March 19 every year.

P.S. For an overview of the area’s rich history that goes back to the Luiseno Indians, named that by the Franciscan friars who passed through the valley in 1769, the Oceanside Historical Society offers a two-hour downtown history walk. It includes the colorful history of the town, established in 1883.
