Contemporary Art Wins a Beachhead: The La Jolla School of Arts 1960-1964
The La Jolla School of Arts played a significant role in the acceptance of new modes of painting and sculpture in Southern California, winning a beachhead for contemporary art in the 1960s amongst a largely conservative community.
As part of the Art Center in La Jolla, now known as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the school was designed with ocean view studio-classrooms and emphasized the search for a personal contemporary aesthetic. During its short life, this cutting edge institution drew artists from all over the nation as students, educators and as artists-in-residence.
This exhibition focuses on the work of six respected artists who were all members of the School’s faculty and features the paintings of Don Dudley, Fred Holle, Sheldon Kirby and Guy Williams, along with the ceramics of Rhoda Lopez and the ceramics and paintings of Malcolm McClain. These artists represent the core of the School’s dynamic faculty, brought together by the Art Center during a pivotal time in its development as an institution devoted to contemporary art.
The exhibition will run from February 26-July 8, 2012.
There will be a preview reception on Saturday, March 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The reception is complimentary for OMA members and $10 for non-members.
Contemporary Art Wins a Beachhead: The La Jolla School of Arts 1960-1964 is guest curated by Dave Hampton and parallels the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative to resurrect and document the history of art in Southern California from 1945-1980.

Wear Your Aloha Shirt!
Meet Carl Herrman – Celebrate 26 Years Annual Members’ Party, Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 6-9 p.m.
Nothing says “Hawaii” or reminds us of the good old days like the colorful Aloha shirt, which takes its name from the traditional island greeting. It is that same welcoming, embracing spirit of Aloha that has been integral to California Surf Museum’s (CSM) philosophy all these 26 years. We have chosen that unique garment to be the theme for this year’s annual members’ party, and our special guest will be Carl Herrman, designer of the recently released Aloha Shirt postage stamp. More than five years in the making, Carl’s latest design made it through the highly regulated U.S. Postal service’s stamp selection process, and officially launched at a dignitary-filled ceremony at the main Honolulu Post Office on January 19.
Carl Herrman is a long-time member of CSM, and was Editor of Surfing East Magazine, the first publication of its kind on the right coast, 1965. A surfer since 1958, Herrman submitted his imaginative cartoon art, photographs, and articles to various East Coast surfing publications for many years. In 1992 he became one of five USPS Art Directors whose job it is to envision and co-ordinate the design of postage stamps. CSM members might recall the Duke Kahanamoku stamp that debuted in 2002, the Silver Surfer, and the classic Woody car stamp – all Carl’s projects. Those, and nearly 400 of his other images have accented our mail envelopes for years.
By all means — wear your best Aloha Shirt to the party and come prepared to have a really great time! Also — now is the perfect time to clean out that closet and donate a pile of your old, good condition Aloha shirts that have, ahem, shrunk over the years. CSM will be happy to recycle them on the popular vintage shirt rack in the Museum Store. As an incentive, you will receive a raffle ticket for each shirt you bring in. Come and enjoy da kine Hawaiian food, tropical beverages, and mellow island music. Free admission to CSM members, $10 for non-members.
Please RSVP to help us plan ahead: 760-721-6876 x105. Mahalo!
Aloha Also Means Farewell
Wednesday evening February 29th will also be an opportunity to say “farewell” to two of CSM’s current displays, the popular Hansen Surfboards 50th Anniversary exhibit, unveiled last September, and CSM’s 25-year history wall. To cap off the exhibits’ run, we will be auctioning off a finely-crafted reproduction of Hansen’s classic 1967 Superlight model, shaped by Bill Shrosbree. The board is currently on display at CSM, and interested individuals can place an advance bid ahead of time. Many thanks to the Shroz, and to Hansen’s, for this additional fundraising opportunity.

Contemporary Art Wins a Beachhead: The La Jolla School of Arts 1960-1964 is guest curated by Dave Hampton and parallels the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative to resurrect and document the history of art in Southern California from 1945-1980.
