In recognition of Black History Month and “The Big Read Program”, the Oceanside Public Library presents Black History Month Films Festival. On Monday, February 6, 2012 at 3:30pm, the Mission Branch Library (3861-B Coast Mission Ave) will show the movie “The Color Purple (1985)” at the Library Community Room.
The Color Purple follows the life of Celie Johnson, an African-American woman who struggles through life in Georgia during the early 1900s. Back in 1930 where the story takes place, the Southern United States addressed so many issues including exceedingly low position in American social culture. The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Academy Awards starring Whoopi Goldsberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey. The movie is directed by Steven Spielberg. It is rated PG-13 (run time 154 minutes).
The “Big Read Program” is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture.
